The Island Tapes
The Island Tapes released our DVD/CD at Celtic Connections. The Island Tapes is the brainchild of David Allison, guitarist. The gig consists of 5 short films recorded in the 1920’s& 30’s on the Scottish Islands (Shetland, Harris, Skye, Orkney and St Kilda) when the first moving picture cameras existed. As the films are silent we David Allison – Guitar, ukulele
Allan Neave – Guitar; Ian Melrose – Guitar, Whistles, ukulele and vocals provide the musical score.
The films are humorous, insightful and moving especially the St Kilda film which was recorded just two years before the Islanders were forced to evacuate.
(For those of you who don’t know St Kilda is a small group of Islands, a dormant volcano, 41 miles west off The Island of Lewis in the Atlantic Ocean. People lived there until 1931. An Isolated area having contact with the outside world for 7only months of the year. Check out www.kilda.org.uk
Since its outset at Celtic Connections in 2006 we’ve performed at the Edinburgh Festival, toured Germany and Estonia, performed at Tartan Week in New York and on Ellis Island. We did a remount in 2007 with the addition of a new film ‘New Way to a New World’, which follows the journey of a boat from Scotland, leaving the Broomielaw in Glasgow and arriving in Manhattan passing the Statue of Liberty. For further info please check out: www.theislandtapes.com, DVD/CDs are available to buy from that site.

Savourna Stevenson Duo
‘Persian Knights/Celtic Dawn’. This is a project put together by Savourna Stevenson. Savourna is one of Scotland’s most recognised composers and harp players, who has worked with players such as Aly Bain, Catriona Macdonald, Fairport Convention, Eddi Reader and June Tabor and has also written Classical pieces for Quintet, the Royal Scottish National Orchestra featuring Billy Boyd as a narrator and also Children’s Classics. She has frequently preformed at WOMAD and while there met the Chemerani’s; a family of drummers from Iran. Since then she had been working on a way of collaborating with them and this took the form of her new album released in June 2006 on Cookin’ Vinyl Records – Persian Knights/Celtic Dawn. Within this, she set the words of poet Kahlil Gibran, and this is where I came in. It was a great gig a joy to be part of this project. I haven’t come across drumming or harp playing like it, and as a singer Savourna’s settings really make me work which I like. From this Savourna and I have put together a duo and have just completed a tour in Scotland gigging some great settings of songs by Savourna including her settings of Michael Marra, Liz Lochead’s and Les Barkers words. We’re planning to continue this work so keep an eye out. www.savournastevenson.com
Then there’s the film and theatre work…
